    Set to open in November 2025, the new Ismaili Centre in Houston, Texas introduces an architectural presence of quiet strength and civic openness. Designed by London-based studio Farshid Moussavi Architecture, the 150,000-square-foot complex will be the first Ismaili Centre in the United States and the seventh in a global network of architecturally significant institutions located in London, Lisbon, Dubai, Dushanbe, Vancouver, and Toronto.

    The center is located near Houston’s Museum District and engages with its surroundings through a measured composition of stone, perforated metal, and glass. The design reflects the Ismaili community’s long tradition of building spaces that embody pluralism, learning, and cultural exchange.

    Farshid Moussavi’s Luminous Structure

    The architecture of Farshid Moussavi’s Ismaili Centre is defined by its balance of openness and enclosure. At its center is a five-story atrium, framed by stepped staircases in textured stone and wrapped in geometric perforations that diffuse daylight across interior surfaces. The upper volumes are clad in delicately patterned metal screens, creating a soft interplay between solid and void that shifts with the sun’s movement.

    From the exterior, the design team sculpts a composition which reads as a series of interlocking planes — horizontal eivans extending outward to form shaded terraces and verandas, a recurring motif in Persian and Islamic architecture. These transitional spaces, lined with slender columns, temper the Houston sun while framing long views across the nine-acre landscape designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz.

    Light Geometries of Perforated Screens

    Farshid Moussavi curates a material palette to emphasize tactile precision throughout its Ismaili Centre. Pale limestone masonry grounds the building, its rhythm broken by areas of subtle relief. The upper screens introduce a lighter register which evoke the fine geometric order characteristic of Islamic architectural ornament. Inside, the surfaces shift between smooth stone, finely grained wood, and perforated metal panels, establishing a continuity between the sacred and the civic spaces within.

    Light enters through clerestory openings and skylights, filtering downward through layered planes. This controlled luminosity animates the central atrium — a generous, processional space that serves as both circulation and gathering zone, where shifting daylight brings the geometry to life.

    Public Institution and Community Engagement

    Beyond its architectural qualities, the Ismaili Centre Houston is conceived as a public institution. The program includes an exhibition gallery, black box theatre, educational rooms, café, banquet halls, and a prayer hall. These spaces will host cultural, intellectual, and community-oriented events, and will expand the center’s role beyond worship to include gathering and shared learning.

    Farshid Moussavi describes the project as embodying ‘His Highness the Aga Khan’s vision of a space that welcomes all, fostering dialogue, learning, and cultural exchange.’ The design’s openness, both physical and social, encapsulates that intention, and uses architecture as a medium for connection rather than separation.

Designed in collaboration with local firm Modus Studio, the 42,000-square-foot mass-timber building stands as a new precedent for environmentally-responsive campus architecture informed by material research and regional identity.

    The center is both an academic facility and a working laboratory dedicated to timber design, sustainable forestry, and digital fabrication. With classrooms, studios, galleries, and a double-height fabrication hall, the building is a core component of the university’s growing Art and Design District.

    Dean Peter MacKeith describes the center as ‘a living curriculum’ which allows students to engage with the full lifecycle of architecture, from material sourcing to assembly. At the same time, the project supports faculty research into affordable housing, forestry, and emerging timber technologies.

    Grafton Architects’ ‘Story Book of Timber’

    True to Grafton Architects’ material-driven approach, the building is conceived as a ‘Story Book of Timber.’ Its structure reveals layers of Southern Yellow Pine, white oak, red cedar, and other native species sourced from Arkansas forests. The Pritzker Prize-winning architects top the structure with a cascading roof system of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels supported by monumental glue-laminated beams that function as rainwater gutters.

    This roof performs as both infrastructure and climate mediator — shading interiors from the southern sun, directing runoff to a bioswale, and defining the center’s architectural character. Circulation routes thread between the fabrication hall and teaching spaces, opening framed views toward the courtyard and surrounding campus. Passive strategies, such as calibrated glazing and natural ventilation, reduce dependency on active systems like air conditioning.

    International Design Informed by Local Expertise

    The partnership between Grafton Architects and Modus Studio brought together international design experience and regional construction expertise.     Introduction to FORMA’s House on a Hill

    The House on a Hill by architecture studio FORMA sits in Hillsdale, New York, a black volume poised at the crest of a soft, wooded slope. Conceived during the pandemic, the project embodies a distinctly contemporary form of domesticity, informed by self-sufficiency and adaptability.

    FORMA founders Miroslava Brooks and Daniel Markiewicz — longtime friends, collaborators, and first-time homebuilders — purchased the nine-acre parcel in 2020. What began as a shared escape from city life soon evolved into a five-year process of experimentation and perseverance. With costs escalating and labor scarce, they reworked their vision repeatedly, turning constraint into catalyst. Thus, the home is at once compact and generous, navigating design ambition with practical reality.

    FORMA Reimagines Scale and Structure

    With its earlier versions of its House on a Hill, the architects at FORMA envisioned a larger, two-story house. As budgets tightened, the team distilled the concept to its essence — a three-bedroom, three-bath dwelling organized around a 700-square-foot footprint. Its double-height living and dining space occupies the upper floor, suspended above a modest base to frame broad views toward the Catskills and Berkshires.

    This vertical organization balances efficiency with openness. The lower level anchors the house to the hillside, while the elevated main space captures light from multiple orientations. Each level feels distinct yet continuous, connected by controlled shifts in volume and view.

    A Dialogue with the Landscape of Upstate New York

    Positioned to take full advantage of the natural clearing, FORMA’s House on a Hill reveals a deliberate choreography of approach and outlook. From the west, its dark cedar siding and vertical windows emphasize gravity and enclosure. Moving around to the east, the structure lifts on angled supports, its geometry lightening as it opens toward the pond below.

    This careful manipulation of form and posture situates the house between object and environment — architectural enough to assert itself, but deferential to its rural context. The shifting elevations invite changing perceptions, a dialogue between stillness and motion as the viewer moves through the clearing.

    A Cedar-Clad Exterior

    The exterior, clad in dark-stained cedar, reads as a singular sculptural gesture. Inside, lighter tones and warm finishes offer a counterpoint.     The 35-story Alta Tower is designed to embody the bank’s values of stability, security, and resilience through architecture that balances precision with openness. The project will include a pedestrian plaza lined with shops and cafés, strengthening the relationship between the city’s growing business center and its university campus.

    Alta Tower Adds to the Expanding City’s Growing Skyline

    The Zaha Hadid Architects-designed Alta Tower will neighbor a main shopping center in Belgrade and will be within walking distance of Ušće Park. At the same time, it sits at a junction between the Sava and Danube rivers. The tower is set to become a vertical landmark that joins Belgrade’s quickly evolving skyline.

    Accessibility is central to the proposal. Alta Tower will be directly served by bus and tram routes, the BG Voz urban rail system, and an upcoming metro station next to the site. With these transport connections, the project will add to Belgrade’s wider strategy to expand New Belgrade as its major commercial hub.

    The Tower and the Podium

    Zaha Hadid Architects organizes its Alta tower to rise from a large podium. This street-level element aligns with the surrounding urban fabric, its terraces and gardens providing informal outdoor areas for employees and residents. Above, the tower rises with a fluid, vertically grained geometry characteristic of Zaha Hadid’s recent civic and corporate works.

    The lower and podium levels will accommodate Alta Bank’s main offices, including adaptable workspaces and outdoor terraces. Rental office floors occupy mid-levels, while residential units rise higher, oriented to capture panoramic views of the Danube valley and Belgrade’s Old Town. Executive floors at the tower’s summit will overlook the city’s skyline.

    Vertical Louvres for a Fluid Facade

    Belgrade’s continental climate informed key environmental strategies within the design. The tower incorporates natural ventilation across its interiors and uses vertical louvers along its facade to filter sunlight and manage thermal gain. This responsive skin creates a balance between opacity and transparency, and enhances the interior light quality as it shapes the tower’s overall expression.

    Built with locally-sourced materials, the development emphasizes modular efficiency. Construction systems and finishes are optimized to reflect both the precision of Zaha Hadid’s design language and the practical sustainability goals of a future-focused headquarters.

Conceived as part of Belalu Bali Boutique & Spa Experience, the villa reflects the retreat’s vision of combining ecological awareness with contemporary comfort. Its dome form symbolizes the architects’ ideas of unity, continuity, and gentle protection, and harmonizes with the layered greenery that defines the Indonesian island’s terrain.

    The architecture favors organic expression over linear composition. Arched bamboo frames spring directly from the ground, joining above in a continuous sweep that shapes both roof and wall. Without straight columns or visible separations, the form reads as one fluid gesture to lend curved, fluid interiors. The structure appears to breathe with its setting, light shifting through woven bamboo as air moves across its surface.

    Inside Pablo Luna Studio’s Belalu Dome Villa, three interconnected spaces unfold. The central bedroom opens toward a semi-open bathroom and private garden, where textured limestone walls and ulin wood finishes bring tactile richness.     The layout extends toward an indoor jacuzzi that opens onto the living area, maintaining a consistent sense of continuity.     Introduction to Arquitectura-G’s Project: House II

    In Sintra, Portugal, Arquitectura-G completes House II, the latest intervention within a long-abandoned quinta de recreio, a rural estate historically devoted to agriculture and leisure. The project forms part of an ongoing sequence of works by the studio’s team, which seeks to conserve and rehabilitate the site’s buildings and reactivate the broader territory.

    Design Approach and Challenges

    Strict regulations limited any change to the building’s external profile, facades, or roof, so Arquitectura-G responded by hollowing out the existing interior, retaining only the perimeter walls, and inserting a new structural body of blue-pigmented concrete. Rising from the basement cellar, this inserted core incorporates a helical staircase and extends upward to form the slabs of the upper levels. It culminates beneath a skylight on the first floor, where daylight streams into the central void and organizes the surrounding rooms.

    Historic Wine Cellar Reinterpreted as a Self-Sufficient Dwelling

    Envisioned as a self-sufficient landscape of vineyards, orchards, forests, gardens, and livestock, the Barcelona-based team of Arquitectura-G transforms this estate under the principles of permaculture, an approach to design that works with natural ecosystems to create sustainable, regenerative, and resilient ways of living

    The building itself, once a hybrid structure combining a wine cellar with living quarters for workers and servants, stood for decades as a fragmented volume of interlinked spaces stitched together by multiple staircases. The architects reinterpret this mixed typology into a single dwelling that preserves the memory of its dual past.

    Layout and Organization of the Residence

    The blue concrete spine organizes the residence. On the ground floor, an open-plan arrangement of kitchen, dining, and living areas gathers around the staircase. Bedrooms occupy the upper level at both ends of the plan, while a secondary lounge occupies the skylit heart of the house, transforming what had been a utilitarian and subdivided structure into a unified domestic space in Portugal.

    Introduction to Shenzhen Bay Cultural Plaza

    The Shenzhen Bay Cultural Plaza, designed by MAD, is approaching completion in the city’s Houhai district. First unveiled in June 2020, the project has been documented through several phases of construction, with images released in February 2025 marking significant progress. MAD has now shared one final set of photographs by Zhu Yumeng ahead of the plaza’s expected opening later this year.

    Designed as a public space between Shenzhen’s central business district and the bay, the development extends across 51,000 square meters. Its total built area of 188,000 square meters includes multiple exhibition halls, theaters, and public facilities. As construction concludes, the plaza will become a landmark of the larger Shenzhen Bay Culture Park, focusing on ecology, urban infrastructure, and public life.

    MAD’s Green Urban Living Room

    From the outset, the architects at MAD emphasized the plaza’s role as a civic landscape. ‘Shenzhen Bay Culture Plaza should be a green urban living room that grows alongside the city’s development,’ notes lead designer Ma Yansong. The architecture merges public gathering areas with an expansive green roof that overlooks the city’s broader ecological network.

    The plaza’s exhibition hall is embedded beneath rolling lawns, creating continuity with adjacent parks and green belts. Pedestrian bridges extend connections into surrounding neighborhoods and commercial districts, while the slopes and open courtyards above host walking paths, picnic areas, and spaces for informal social activity.

    Landform and Ecological Integration

    By moving much of the program underground, MAD frames the surface as a landscape intervention rather than a conventional building. This approach is a reminder of Shenzhen Bay’s role as an ecological corridor along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, a habitat for migratory waterbirds. Planting strategies prioritize native vegetation, and a variety of tree species have been selected to enhance seasonal biodiversity while supporting avian feeding areas.

    This new topography shifts with the seasons and offers shaded areas in summer and open clearings in winter. The landscape’s integration of ecological systems with public amenities means that the project stands as both a cultural space and a contributor to the bay’s environmental resilience.

    Programmatic Flexibility and Cultural Offerings

    Programmatic flexibility is a defining feature of MAD’s Shenzhen Bay Cultural Plaza. The central pool can be converted into an open-air theater for concerts or outdoor film screenings, and courtyards and green terraces provide platforms for markets, performances, and community events. A network of bicycle lanes and walking paths links the site to main city routes and extends its reach as an everyday, easy-to-access public amenity.

    Visitors arriving from surrounding commercial centers will be able to cross directly into the rooftop park or descend into underground cultural spaces without encountering traffic.

    The program includes the North Hall, South Hall, and Theme Hall, which together provide nine exhibition halls and approximately 50,000 square meters of display space. Additional facilities such as a 720-seat stone theater, a 330-seat lecture hall, and an art collection library contribute to the cultural program.
