Refreshing a bedroom in an hour that will have you and/or overnight guests feel right at home, starting with a comfy, cozy bed, bedding, and small thoughtful touches.

Four years ago this month, we moved to our house on the lake. It was the best decision as we love where we live and love every inch of our 1970s house that I have been updating and making over room by room to make each one fit my decorating style.

I am very happy with the decorating transformation of every room, but for the holidays, I did want to make one change to one of the guest rooms.

For one of the rooms, I added a more masculine vibe, while the other, more feminine. The more masculine room feels visually warmer and has soft, thick, and plush bedding. It also has a king-size bed, and when we give guests the option to stay in either room, they always opt for the cozier feel of the masculine navy and green room.

For the winter months, I removed the “cool” color canvases and kept the 3 warmer color canvases. I just placed them behind the bed to emphasize the headboard.

I was just beginning my search for new heavyweight bedding for the bed in the room when I learned that Kohl’s has a line of bedding made by CuddlDuds. Yes, the same company that makes long underwear. For the winter months, I wanted to make sure the bed would be extra cozy and inviting.

Seeing how these colors look, has me thinking about painting the entire wall using one of the colors to create an accent wall like I did in the other guest room.

Over the holidays, we will be hosting a few friends and family, and I want both rooms to be extra comfy and cozy. It was time to ramp up the comfy-cozy factor in the more feminine room.

One of the most important things to all of our health, mental and physical, is sleep. After 30 years of parenting, I get this. Why We Chose a Nectar Mattress

First, we knew our choice had to be a quality memory foam mattress. Our previous mattress had been a traditional spring model, and I had to make it more comfortable for my back by adding a very thick memory foam pad to it. It worked well for immediate pain, but didn’t provide very good support. Especially for Steve. So we knew our next mattress was going to have to be memory foam, it is the only way I can sleep well.

Given my new obsession with natural health, our mattress also had to be Certi-Pur, which means it doesn’t use volatile chemicals in production. Nectar is. So we got our mattress in this pretty blue box. This is small and compact, but ours was a California King, so it was pretty heavy. We had just moved into a new house, so our bed frame hadn’t gotten delivered yet. But since the instructions say it can take a day or two to fully expand, we opened it right on the bedroom floor!

Once you take the mattress out of the box and unroll it, the fun begins. We carefully cut open the plastic bag the mattress was sealed in, and it immediately started to expand. Did we mention, it came with two memory foam pillows too? Watching the mattress expand is kind of magic, it’s a little like the satisfaction you get from watching those expanding snake fireworks in the summer. I’ll just say it. It’s so cool.

So we got our bed frame delivered, and we started sleeping on the mattress. Here’s what we found…

Pros and Cons

With our Nectar mattress review, the most important thing to us was physical comfort. The fact that the mattress was firm soon became a non-issue. We realized that first night that even though when you first lay down it feels firm, it quickly molds to your body. This was great for both comfort and support. I waited for the aching that first morning, as I adjusted to a new bed. It’s the same ache I get in every hotel, no matter how luxurious. It happens everywhere. But, it didn’t happen here. Neither Steve nor I had this “sleeping on a cloud” feeling that we would get from a thick memory foam mattress pad, but that was a good thing… We also didn’t get back aches. I honestly couldn’t believe my body was so happy with this Nectar mattress!

The pillows took a little more convincing. As I said before, they are pretty substantial. They are thicker and also very firm. I was worried they would place too much pressure on my neck, forcing it upward instead of holding it in line with my body. However, the pillows also formed to my head the same way the mattress formed to my body. I was able to use them without any pain, though to be honest, if I had to choose again, I probably would not use a pillow so thick. Steve felt the same way. So if you like a thick, firm, supportive pillow, this is your guy. The quality was excellent. They did have a light smell for a few evenings, but that dissipated quickly.

I often post about how to use the furniture and decorative accessories you already own and move them from one room to another to change the look of each room, but now… why not do the same for your bed?

Where to put the decorative pillows when you are sleeping on the bed can become a problem if you have a lot of decorative bed pillows to take off every night.

I try keep my throw pillows at a minimum and do like the look of large sham covered pillows over smaller decorative ones for my king size bed.

I place them in a large basket at night that is across from my bed. Sometimes I move the basket to the opposite corner, but it is always in my room. Its only use is to place throw pillows in at night.

When these throw pillows are not in use for the season, I store them in my linen closet.

So the next time you change the sheets on your bed or are doing a seasonal change, don’t take styling the bed too seriously.
